Once upon a time there was a girl, let’s call her Anka. She was a dreamer, reading fantastic books and watching movies that told stories about fantastic worlds, heroes and adventures. But she often felt lonely and yearned for love. Her mother urged her she needed to go out more often, be more outgoing and be more active and participate in social events. Her dreaming would never get her a prince and grant her a presentable life. She would have to change everything she was in order to fit in. Anka hated to be in crowds. She hated most of the music in discos, she hated the excessive drinking. Yet she made herself go there again and again because that’s what was expected. She lived in a world where looks were everything and one needed to be slim and pretty to be accepted. She was very unhappy because she would never fit into such a world or be happy there, no matter how hard she tried. One day, she heard a tale of a fantastic world, available at her fingertips, called the World of Warcraft. She went there for a visit and was blown away by the fantastic stories told and the secrets to be discovered.
It happened at the time that she met her cousin again, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time. They went out for a drink and funnily enough, he frequented the World of Warcraft as well.
Something wonderful happened. Through her cousin, Anka found a group of likeminded people. They would go out on the weekends – mages, warriors, priests and hunters – maybe go to the movies or having a drink in a bar. But they would also gather with their laptops and computers and sit together all night long, experiencing extraordinary adventures together and laugh a lot.
But there was a jealous witch masquerading as a friend. The witch would whisper into Ankas ear how this happiness was really an addiction and very bad for her. The only way to be happy was to diet and be pretty. And the witch succeeded in poisoning Ankas’ thoughts and happiness.
One day, Anka was exploring the fair country of Azshara in Azeroth, when a frog came along. The frog said his name was Raziel and that he really was a prince in disguise. Anka believed him, fell head over heels in love (probably by means of a love potion…) and left her home Helvetica, all her friends and family, to move to Raziels castle in Allemania. The good thing was, this parted her from the witch and slowly the poison went out of Ankas mind and body. But there was no Prince Raziel, it was all just an illusion. Raziel turned out to not only be a frog, but an evil wizard frog. He had lured Anka to Allemania to take advantage of her and when he was sick of her, he kicked her out of his rusty hut.
There she was, stranded in Allemania, her friends and family far away. But WoW had taught her to never ever give up. To stand up and fight. And so she did, eventhough she was deeply hurt. She found a pretty place to stay and work to sustain herself. And eventhough she might have been physically alone, she never really was. Because whenever she logged onto the World of Warcraft and explored the wonders of Azeroth or the Shattered World or the icy planes of Northrend – she was never alone. There were people who listened to her and gave her comfort.
So it came that she met a strong warrior with a golden heart. He went by many names and many forms but his golden heart was always the same. He shall be known by the name of Aidan. Very slowly, there was friendship growing through lots of chatting. Writing turned into hours and hours of talking on the phone. And as it was, Aidan wasn’t located too far away from Anka. So it came that they met in person and their strong friendship turned into love the very moment they laid eyes on each other. And Aidan was her prince and she his princess. They loved each other for who they were and not what everyone else wanted them to be. And because she was longing for her home and the homesickness was the only thing shadowing their happiness, they bundled up their belongings and moved back to Helvetica.
And they lived happily ever after in both worlds.
